HISTORY AND HOME COMFORTS IN A CORNISH COTTAGE

Fiona Webster and her family find a warm welcome and centuries of tradition in Tregaseal.

AT one time few holidaymakers ventured as far as Land’s End and the neighbouring town of St Just. Then they discovered St Ives in the ‘50s and the area took off.

Now thousands flock to the western tip of Cornwall, but it still feels less discovered – and less hectic - than its neighbouring county of Devon and other Cornish villages along the coast.

We wanted a holiday location for four  - two adults, our visiting twenty something daughter and our Border Collie dog, Bonnie. It needed to be comfortable, with plenty to do and see nearby and, of course, dog friendly. We tried Cottages.com which had an excellent range of properties, big and small, and found what looked like the perfect answer - Meadow Cottage, in the Cornish hamlet of Tregeseal, near St Just.

The two-bedroom cottage was comfortable, well equipped, stylish and ideal for pets. They even provided a dog bowl. There was a double bedroom and one single, all beautifully decorated but practical too. Outside was a little sheltered garden with a dining table where we ate in the warm evenings and just across the lane, a stream, which the dog loved paddling in. The kitchen was well equipped, with an electric cooker, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher and freezer. The sitting room featured a cosy fireplace with a wood burner (not that we needed it in the mid-summer warmth), two comfy sofas, books, games, Freeview TV and DVDs.

The area boasts coastal paths, wild moorland and beaches to stroll along – all perfect for a lively pet like ours. And for us humans, St Just was a ten-minute walk and had plenty to do and see, including coffee shops, three pubs, a pizzeria, and a fish and chip shop. Plus, there was a beach about a mile away. There is an ancient stone circle you can walk to, and the area’s mining history is evident.

Penzance, Land’s End and St Ives are all handy and well worth a trip. Land’s End feels a bit commercialised but worth it for its wild ruggedness and views to the Scilly Isles, which you can reach by ferry or plane via Land’s End airport. St Ives is packed with cafes and galleries and has several sandy beaches, including one for dog owners. Penzance is a great city, rejuvenated and boasting lots of excellent restaurants such as the wonderful new fish restaurant The Shore and the more established Mackerel Sky.  Do try Penzance’s newly refurbished open-air lido for a refreshing swim. A short drive away are historic Marazion opposite St Michael’s Mount,  Mousehole with its windy lanes and coffee shops and the working harbour of Newlyn where you can buy fresh fish.

If you and your hound like your home comforts, a cottage holiday is perfect. Cottages.com have thousands of great properties, big and small, all over Britain, but also in France, Ireland and Italy, many pet friendly. We would definitely return to Meadow Cottage and Cornwall.

Prices for Meadow Cottage start at £381 for 7 nights.
